This test uses a saliva sample to measure a person’s Cortisol level. Saliva testing can provide just as accurate a measurement of adrenal hormones like Cortisol as a blood test can. Cortisol testing is usually ordered to aid in the diagnosis of conditions related to the adrenal and pituitary glands such as Addison's Disease, Cushing's Syndrome, Adrenocortical Insufficiency or Hypersecretion.
Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Proper Cortisol levels are important for helping the body to maintain a number of functions such as blood pressure, glucose levels, immune response, and stress management.
Cortisol saliva testing allows a person to make a collection at any time of day without having to be at a lab. This method also allows people to make a collection during times when they are experiencing symptoms which may be related to irregular Cortisol production such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, and insomnia.
This test is performed on a single specimen. However, testing for up to 7 specimens may be ordered at an additional cost. This allows people to collect multiple samples at different times which can offer a more accurate assessment of how Cortisol levels rise and fall throughout the day. Please inquire with a Request A Test representative about ordering testing on multiple saliva samples.
Turnaround time for the Cortisol Saliva test is typically 4-7 business days.
Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
People ordering this test must acquire a specimen vial at the lab prior to making a collection. Once the specimen has been collected, it should be refrigerated and returned to the lab within 24 hours. Please follow any additional instructions from lab personnel regarding your collection.
