The Cryptosporidium test is used in the detection of Cryptosporidium-specific antigen (CSA) in fecal specimens. Cryptosporidium is a type of microscopic parasite which causes the diarrheal disease Cryptosporidiosis. CSA is produced by the parasites as they multiply in the intestinal tract. Exposure to Cryptosporidium comes from ingesting or touching things which have come in contact with contaminated feces. This includes drinking water from lakes, streams and public pools, eating contaminated food or putting your hands in or near your mouth after touching contaminated surfaces.
The most common symptom of infection is diarrhea which may be accompanied by stomach cramps, fever, nausea, weight loss and dehydration. While most people recover within a few weeks, infection can cause severe or even life threatening illnesses for people with weakened immune systems.
Turnaround time for this test is typically 1-2 business days.
Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
People ordering the Cryptosporidium Test should go to the lab to obtain a proper specimen container prior to collection.
Fecal specimens for parasitic examination should be collected before initiation of antidiarrheal therapy or antiparasitic therapy.
