HIV-1 Western Blot Test

Specimen Type: Blood

Description: Typically, the Western Blot HIV-1 test is used as a confirmatory test after an HIV-1 Abs test has a positive result. The Western BLOT HIV-1 test looks for many different types of HIV antigen groups which are represented as "bands" in the result. To have a positive HIV-1 Western Blot result, specific bands must be present. Bands can be listed as present but may not be the ones listed as fitting the "positive results" criteria. It is not recommended to use the Western Blot test as an initial screening test because some individuals may be HIV-1 negative but show the presence of bands that do not fit the "positive results" criteria. Turnaround time is typically 1-3 business days.

Incubation Period: Antibodies for HIV can appear as early as a few weeks after being infected with the HIV-1 virus. The bulk of the population would demonstrate HIV-1 antibodies after 3 months from a potential contact or exposure. In rare circumstances, it could take past 6 months to be detectible for HIV-1.
