This test is used to screen for the parasitic infection which causes Trichomonas (Trich). Trichomonas is considered to be the most common curable STD. An estimated 3.7 million have the infection but less than a third develop symptoms.
Trichomonas is transmitted during sexual contact. Trich typically affects the urethra in men and the lower genital tract in women. Trich infections commonly cause no symptoms but when symptoms do occur, they can range from mild irritation to severe inflammation. Itching, burning during urination and unusual discharge may occur. An infected person who is not experiencing symptoms can still spread the parasite to others. Trichomonas infections increase the risk of contracting or spreading other STD’s including HIV.
Trichomonas testing is advisable for anyone who is sexually active. Pregnant women should consider being tested as Trich can cause complications such as premature births and low birth weights for infants.
This Trichomonas test in conducted with a urine sample. Unlike a swab test, a urine collection is pain free, noninvasive, and can be done in privacy.
Turnaround time for this test is typically 3-7 business days.
Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
For the majority of people, this test will have a high level of accuracy at 3 weeks from a potential exposure or any time after. Some people may be detectable as early as a few days from exposure.
NOTE: THIS TEST IS FOR FEMALES ONLY
The client should not have urinated for at least one hour prior to specimen collection. Please to provide a first-catch urine (approximately 20-30 mL of the initial urine stream) into a urine collection cup free of any preservatives. Collection of larger volumes of urine may result in specimen dilution that may reduce test sensitivity.
