Description:
This test looks for Adenovirus Antibodies in the blood. Adenovirus is actually a family of over 40 viruses that can cause a range of illnesses. People of any age can be infected with Adenovirus. The viruses are spread through droplets in the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Close contact with an infected person or touching a surface that has been contaminated can also cause infection. Adenovirus can cause various illnesses, including bronchitis, pneumonia, diarrhea, and pink eye (conjunctivitis). Common symptoms are similar to other illnesses such as the flu or the common cold. Most people infected with Adenovirus do not become seriously ill and recover on their own. However, those with weakened immune systems or preexisting respiratory or heart conditions have a higher likelihood of developing serious complications.
Testing for Adenovirus is typically done when someone has symptoms that are associated with infection. A positive antibody test can help differentiate adenovirus from other common illnesses.
Turnaround for this test is typically 3-7 business days.
