Adrenal Antibodies Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures antiadrenal antibodies, also known as adrenal antibodies, in a blood sample. Antiadrenal antibodies are a type of autoimmune antibody that are created when the body's immune system mistakenly targets its own cells and tissues, in this case, the adrenal cortex which is part of the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands produce several important hormones including cortisol and aldosterone. Damage to the adrenal glands causes a deficiency in these hormones.
Testing for adrenal antibodies is most often used to aid in diagnosing adrenal insufficiency, also known as Addison's Disease. Symptoms of Addison's include fatigue, weight loss, darkened skin coloration, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, muscle or joint pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, irritability, and depression. These symptoms can develop slowly over time and are common to other disorders so identifying Addison's Disease can require specific testing. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent serious health complications.
This test is typically ordered when someone has symptoms of Addison's Disease. Antiadrenal Antibodies are often ordered with other blood tests including Cortisol and ACTH.
The turnaround for this test is typically 3-5 business days.
