Amino Acid Urine Test (Labcorp)
This test measures the levels of various amino acids in the urine. Amino acids are organic compounds that play a role in many essential functions throughout the body. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and can either be produced by the body or come from the food a person eats. There are 20 amino acids that are necessary for normal healthy bodily functions. 9 of these, known as essential amino acids, cannot be produced by the body on its own and must come from a person's diet. Amino acid levels can be affected by a person's diet as well as conditions that affect the enzymes necessary to break down and absorb various types of amino acids. Urine testing measures the level of amino acids that are being eliminated from the body. Low urine levels can correspond to lowered blood levels which may indicate dietary deficiencies or other issues. Irregularly high levels of amino acids in urine can be indicative of a number of disorders including digestive issues, metabolic disorders, liver, disease, and impaired kidney function.
