Carbamazepine Blood Test

This test measures the level of the drug Carbamazepine in the blood.  Carbamazepine is an antiepileptic typically used in therapy for people suffering from seizures.  Determining the proper dosage level for a person is vital to effective treatment.  A dosage which is too low may not be effective and undesirable side effects may result from a dosage which is too high.  Potential side effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Uncoordinated movement
  • Sleepiness
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Involuntary back and forth movement of the eyeball
  • Red, itchy rash
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Confusion

This test may be ordered to determine if the dosage of Carbamazepine a person is receiving is appropriate.  Follow up testing may be necessary until the proper dosage is calculated.  Testing is usually performed right before the next dose is taken.

Turnaround time for the Carbamazepine Blood test is typically 1-2 business days

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
