Description:

Cardio IQ Lipoprotein Subfractionation Blood Test (Quest)

The Cardio IQ Lipoprotein Subfractionation test provides a number of measurements which can help assess a person's risk for heart disease. This test includes measurements for:

  • HDL Particle Number
  • LDL Particle Number
  • Non-HDL Particle Number
  • HDL, Small
  • HDL, Large
  • LDL, Very Small-d
  • LDL, Very Small-c
  • LDL, Very Small-b
  • LDL, Very Small-a
  • LDL, Small
  • LDL, Medium
  • LDL, Large-b
  • LDL, Large-a
  • IDL, Small
  • IDL, Large
  • VLDL, Small
  • VLDL, Medium
  • VLDL, Large
  • LDL Pattern
  • LDL Peak Size

Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), often known as the bad cholesterol, carries cholesterol through the blood stream and smaller denser LDL particles have a greater tendency to build up along arterial walls and form harmful plaque. Plaque buildup increases the risk of blood clots and heart attacks. In some people, Particle Size can be a greater indicator of risk for hearts disease than cholesterol levels.

A Lipoprotein Subfractionation test may be ordered along with or as a follow up to a Lipid Panel Cholesterol Test.  This test is helpful for people who have a family history for heart attack or stroke or are taking medication to manage cholesterol. This test is also ordered for people who have suffered a cardiac event but have normal cholesterol levels to help determine if another factor may be the cause.

Turnaround time for this test is typically 4-7 business days.
