Citrated Platelet Count

Thrombocyte Count Citrated

Test Code: 115345
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Citrated Platelet Count

This test measures the platelets in a blood sample.  Platelets, or thrombocytes, are fragments of cells that are essential for blood clotting.  When someone is injured, platelets normally clump together at the site of the wound to stop the bleeding process.  When a person had a platelet deficiency, also known as Thrombocytopenia, or their platelets do not function properly, they can be at risk of excessive bleeding.  Thrombocytopenia can be caused by a number of conditions including leukemia, anemia, viral infections, inherited genetic disorders, or medications such as blood thinners or chemotherapy.  A platelet count is typically part of a Complete Blood Count (CBC).  However, for some people, clumping of the platelets may cause their count to come back low or prevent an accurate measurement.  Platelet clumping may be the result of the anticoagulant in the tube used to collect a sample for a CBC.  In these cases, a Citrated Platelet Count can be used to provide a more accurate measurement.  If platelet clumping persists when measured with a citrated test, it may be due to other conditions.

This test is typically ordered when a person is unable to get an accurate platelet count as part of a standard CBC test.  It may also be ordered to aid in diagnosing conditions that cause platelet deficiency.

Turnaround for this test is typically 1-3 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
