Creatine Kinase (CK-MB) Blood Test
Description:
Creatine Kinase (CK-MB) Blood Test
This test measures levels of Creatine Kinase (CK) MB in the blood. Creatine Kinase is an enzyme which is produced when muscles are damaged. A Total CK test can help to indicate muscle damage but it cannot identify where the damage has occurred. CK-BM is an isoenzyme of Creatine Kinase which is found primarily in heart muscles. CK-MB is typically ordered as a follow-up to high Creatine Kinase levels to help distinguish between heart damage and a skeletal muscle injury. Increased CK-MB levels may indicate that a person has recently had a heart attack, especially if they are also experiencing chest pains.
The CK-MB test may be ordered after a person has had abnormal results from a Creatine Kinase test. It may also be ordered after someone has experienced a heart attack to help assess the damage to their heart. Other conditions such as kidney failure, surgery, and strenuous exercise may also cause increased CK-MB levels.
Turnaround for this test is typically 1-3 business days.
Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
Requirements:
It is recommended that someone taking Biotin (also known as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R) stop consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.
