Hemoglobin A1C with eAG Blood Test (Labcorp)
A Hemoglobin A1C test is a common blood test used to help evaluate a person's risk for developing diabetes. Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells that helps to carry oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body. Hemoglobin molecules become glycated when they bind with excess glucose (sugar) in the blood. A Hemoglobin A1C test measures the percentage of hemoglobin that is glycated. Since red blood cells typically live about 3 months, an A1C test can determine if your blood sugar levels have been elevated within the last few months. Elevated A1C can indicate that a person is at risk of becoming diabetic. If levels are high enough, it may mean that a person has already developed diabetes.
In addition to measuring hemoglobin A1C levels, this test includes a calculation for estimated average glucose (eAG). EAG indicates a person's average daily blood sugar level. EAG is reported in the same units that are typically used by a blood glucose monitor. An A1C can be more useful than a standard blood glucose test at monitoring risk for diabetes. The use of the Hemoglobin A1C with eAG test is endorsed by the American Diabetes Association.
The hemoglobin A1C with eAG test is typically ordered when someone is monitoring their ability to control their blood sugar. Your doctor may recommend having the Hemoglobin A1C test two to four times per year to monitor treatment. The A1C test is also useful as a periodic screening to assess a person's risk for developing Diabetes. A Hemoglobin A1C test without eAG is also available.
Turnaround time for the Hemoglobin A1C test is typically 1 business day.
