This test measures various substances in a 24-hour urine sample that can help to determine the risk for developing recurrent kidney stones. Kidney stones are formed from minerals and salts in the kidneys. As much as 20% of men and 10% of women develop at least one kidney stone in their lifetime. At least 50% of people who have had a kidney stone will suffer from recurring stones. A urine test for kidney stones measures substances that contribute to kidney stone formation. High concentrations of one or more of these substances in the urine can indicate that a person is likely to develop kidney stones.
The Urine Kidney Stone Analysis includes the following measurements:
- Calcium Oxalate
- Monosodium Urate
Results from this test should be interpreted by your doctor.
Urine Kidney Stone Testing is typically ordered after a person has developed a kidney stone to help determine their risk of developing more stones in the future. Follow-up testing every 6 months to a year is typically recommended to see if any levels are increasing. Testing can also be ordered for people with a family history of kidney stones or other risk factors.
