Description:

Leflunomide Blood Level Test (Quest)

This test measures the level of the drug Leflunomide in the blood.  Leflunomide, also known by the brand name Arava, is often prescribed either by itself or with other drugs to help treat inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis.  Taking the proper dosage of leflunomide is important as took little may not relieve a person's arthritis symptoms and too much can cause unpleasant side effects.  Side effects of leflunomide may include diarrhea, vomiting, heartburn, headache, dizziness, weight loss, back pain, muscle weakness, pain, burning, numbness, or tingling in the hands or feet, hair loss, leg cramps, and dry skin.  Because leflunomide suppresses the immune system, people taking it may be more susceptible to other illnesses.  Pregnant women or women who plan to become should not take leflunomide as it may harm the fetus.

Blood testing shortly after someone begins taking leflunomide may be necessary to help determine the appropriate dosage for that person.  Testing may also be useful when changing medications or adding a new medication to your regimen.  Women who have taken leflunomide and are trying to conceive should check their blood levels to ensure that the medication has been completely eliminated from their system.

Results of this test will provide a numerical value for the level detected unless there is not any drug detected.  Test results should be discussed with your prescribing physician.

Turnaround for this test is typically 3-8 business days.
