Lithium Blood Test
This test measures the amount of Lithium in the blood. Lithium is typically used in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Lithium levels are often measured during the process of determining a person's optimum dosage. A person's age, health and other medications can affect what level of Lithium is best for them. Long term lithium use can effect the kidneys and thyroid.
This test is typically ordered when a person begins Lithium therapy and periodically after to help keep their dosage at the proper level. It is also ordered when a person taking Lithium experiences unusual side effects or begins taking other medications to determine how it may be affecting their blood level. To monitor their kidney and thyroid function, people taking lithium will often order BUN, Creatinine or TSH testing.
