Description:
Megaloblastic Anemia Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test provides several measurements which can help to identify Megaloblastic Anemia. Anemia is typically characterized by low levels of red blood cells. Megaloblastic Anemia is a condition in which the production of red blood cells is impaired. This leads to a large number of immature abnormally structured red blood cells. The most common cause of megaloblastic anemia is a deficiency in vitamin B12 and/or folate which are both essential for the production and healthy development of red blood cells.
Megaloblastic anemia can take longer to develop than other forms of anemia. It may take years for people who are affected to develop symptoms. Common symptoms can include chronic fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, dizziness, muscle weakness, aches and pains, diarrhea, and nausea. As the disease progresses some people can experience tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, confusion, loss of vision, depression, insomnia, and balance problems.
This panel includes measurements for:
- Methylmalonic Acid
- 2-Methylcitirc Acid
- Homocysteine
- Cystathionine
Testing typically ordered when a person has symptoms of megaloblastic anemia. This test is often ordered along with or as a followup to a Vitamin B12 and Folate test.
Turnaround for this test is typically 5-8 business days.
Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
