Description:
Myoglobin Urine Test (Labcorp)
This test measures Myoglobin levels in the urine. Myoglobin is a protein that helps provide oxygen to the heart and skeletal muscles allowing them to function properly. If the heart or skeletal muscles are damaged, myoglobin is released into the bloodstream. Myoglobin is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and excreted from the body in urine. Too much myoglobin can cause damage to the kidneys.
Myoglobin testing may be ordered when someone is suspected of having a severe muscle injury or suffering a heart attack. Urine testing is often ordered along with or as a follow up to a Myoglobin Blood Test. Testing may also be ordered when someone is experiencing kidney failure to help identify the cause.
Turnaround for this test is typically 3-5 business days.
