Dilantin, Diphenylhydantoin, Phenytek

Test Code: 007401
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Phenytoin (Dilantin) Lab Test

This test measures levels of Phenytoin in the blood.  Phenytoin is an anticonvulsant drug which is prescribed to help treat or prevent certain types of seizures.  It is commonly sold under the brand name Dilantin.  Phenytoin must be taken at the proper dosage to be effective.  However, taking too much can cause toxicity with symptoms including loss of balance, eye twitching, confusion, shaking, low blood pressure, and slurred speech.

Phenytoin testing is typically ordered frequently when a person first begins taking the drug in order to find the optimal dosage.  It is then ordered at regular intervals to monitor therapy.  Additional testing may be necessary if a person stops or starts other drugs while taking Phenytoin to monitor the effects of the drugs' interactions.  Results should always be reviewed with a person's prescribing physician.

Turnaround for this Phenytoin (Dilantin) test is typically 1-2 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Requirements:

Specimen collection should be done within several hours of the last dose. Consult your doctor to determine optimal specimen collection time.
