Description:
Platelet Antibody Panel
This test looks for the presence of several types of antibodies that target a person's platelets. Platelets are cell fragments that are responsible for forming blood clots when a person is injured. Several types of disorders including idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and systemic lupus erythematosus cause the body's immune system to mistakenly attack and destroy platelets. A lowered platelet count can put a person at higher risk for bleeding disorders.
The Platelet Antibody Profile looks for 5 types of antibodies including:
- HLA Class 1
- IIb/IIIa
- Ib/IX
- Ia/IIa
- Glycoprotein (GP) IV
This test may be ordered as a followup to a Complete Blood Count (CBC) which shows an irregularly low platelet count. A Platelet Antibody test may also be ordered along with a CBC when someone has symptoms such as bruising easily, wounds that bleed longer than normal, frequent nosebleeds, and heavy menstrual bleeding.
Turnaround for this test is typically 3-6 business days.
