Description:
Theophylline Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures the level of Theophylline in the blood. Theophylline is a medication that is typically prescribed to aid in treating breathing disorders including asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other lung diseases. The medication's primary effect is to relax the muscles in the lungs. It is important to find the proper dosage as too little can be an ineffective treatment and too much can cause toxicity. Theophylline toxicity may be life-threatening. Common symptoms include low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, nausea, confusion, tremors, abdominal pain, and restlessness.
Blood testing for theophylline levels is usually ordered when a person is starting therapy. Multiple tests may be necessary to determine the proper dosage level. Additional testing may be required if someone begins to experience unusual symptoms while taking the medication.
Theophylline can have interactions with caffeine. For this reason, a caffeine blood test is sometimes ordered along with theophylline.
Turnaround for the theophylline level blood test is typically 1-3 business days.
