Test Code: 90559
Specimen Type: Blood
Description:
Very Long Chain Fatty Acids (VLCFA) Blood Test
This test measures the levels of Very Long Chain Fatty Acids (VLCFA) in a blood sample. Testing the levels of VLCFA is typically one to aid in diagnosing a rare inherited condition known as adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). In people with ALD, the process by which the body normally breaks down long-chain fatty acids is impaired, causing them to build up in the blood and various tissues, especially the brain, nervous system, and adrenal glands. Blood testing is often done as a first step in diagnosing ALD. Measurements from these tests can also help to differentiate between different types of ALD disorders including Addison's Disease, Adrenomyelopathy, Refsum disease, and Cerebral ALD.
This test includes the following measurements:
- Phytanic Acid
- Pristanic Acid
- Docosanoic, C22:0
- Tetracosanoic, C24:0
- Hexacosanoic, C26:0
- Ratio C24/C22
- Ratio C26/C22
- Ratio Pristanic/Phytanic
