Description:

Vitamin B12 Binding Capacity, Unsaturated Blood Test (Quest)

This test measures Unsaturated Vitamin B12 Binding Capacity, also known as Transcobalamin, in the blood.  Transcobalamin assists in the binding of Vitamin B12 to Intrinsic Factor so it can be transported throughout the body.  When B12 cannot be properly utilized by the body, a number of health complications can result.  This test can aid in the diagnosis of Megaloblastic Anemia, a condition in which the body's normal process of red blood cell production is impaired leading to uncontrolled cell growth.  This can result in health issues including several types of cancer.

A Vitamin B12 Binding Capacity test may be ordered when someone has irregular results from a Complete Blood Count (CBC) along with symptoms of anemia or B12 deficiency.

Turnaround for this test is typically 3-8 business days.
