Vitamin B12 Binding Capacity, Unsaturated

B12 UBC, Transcobalamin

Test Code: 081869
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Vitamin B12 Binding Capacity, Unsaturated

This test measures Unsaturated Vitamin B12 Binding Capacity, also known as Transcobalamin, in the blood.  Transcobalamin assists in the binding of Vitamin B12 to Intrinsic Factor so it can be transported throughout the body.  When B12 cannot be properly utilized by the body, a number of health complications can result.  This test can aid in the diagnosis of Megaloblastic Anemia, a condition in which the body's normal process of red blood cell production is impaired leading to uncontrolled cell growth.  This can result in health issues including several types of cancer.

A Vitamin B12 Binding Capacity test may be ordered when someone has irregular results from a Complete Blood Count (CBC) along with symptoms of anemia or B12 deficiency.

Turnaround for this test is typically 4-7 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Requirements:

Fasting for at least 12 hours is recommended.

Vitamin B12 supplements should be discontinued at least 72 hours prior to specimen collection.

Must draw before Schilling test, transfusions, or B12 therapy is started. No isotopes administered 24 hours prior to venipuncture.
