Description:
Acacia (Mimosa) Allergy Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures a person's allergic reaction to the acacia tree. Acacia, also known as Mimosa, is a family of trees that are characterized by palm-shaped leaves and periodic blooms of yellow or pink flowers. They are native to India, Australia, and Africa but have been cultivated in other parts of the world. Acacia trees produce heavy pollen which does not usually spread far from the tree itself. Gum from acacia is used to make powdered dietary fiber supplements. Oil from the trees is used in the leather tanning industry. Acacia can cause a variety of symptoms in people with an allergy depending on how they are exposed. Common symptoms include rash, itching, hives, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, sneezing, red eyes, runny nose, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.
Allergies are caused by a reaction in the body's immune system. The body identifies certain substances as harmful and produces IgE antibodies against them. These antibodies trigger the release of histamine which causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction. The severity of the allergy will vary from one person to the next. Blood allergy testing provides numerical results for IgE antibody levels to help determine how severe a reaction a person will have. Positive allergy test results should be discussed with a person's doctor to determine the appropriate follow up.
This test is typically ordered when someone experiences allergy symptoms after coming into contact with acacia pollen or products made from acacia. For more options, please see our allergy testing category.
Turnaround for this test is typically 2-5 business days.
