Description:
Actin (Smooth Muscle) Antibody (ASMA) Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures the level of Actin Smooth Muscle Antibodies (ASMA) in the blood. Smooth muscle antibodies are produced in people with certain types of autoimmune disorders. These disorders cause the body's immune system to produce antibodies that attack its own cells and tissues. Smooth muscle antibodies target actin, a type of protein found in various parts of the body including the muscles and liver. Actin smooth muscle antibodies are typically associated with autoimmune hepatitis. This form of hepatitis causes inflammation of the liver and can lead to cirrhosis or liver failure. ASMA will typically be present in about 70% of people with autoimmune hepatitis. Testing for smooth muscle antibodies can help diagnose and differentiate autoimmune hepatitis from other forms of the disease such as those caused by a viral infection or alcohol abuse. ASMA may be present in other autoimmune diseases that affect the liver such as Primary Biliary Cirrhosis.
The ASMA test is typically ordered when someone has symptoms of liver disease such as jaundice or fatigue. It may be ordered as a follow-up to irregular results from a Hepatic Function Panel. ASMA is usually ordered along with an Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA) test.
Turnaround for this test is typically 1-3 business days.
