Description:
Drug Test - Amphetamine/Methamphetamine with Reflex to D & L Isomers (Labcorp)
This test looks for Amphetamine in a urine sample. In the event of a positive result, additional testing to measure the level of both amphetamine and methamphetamine will be performed at no additional cost. If the sample tests positive for methamphetamine, further testing to measure the levels of D & L isomers will also be performed. Please note that D & L Isomer testing will only be performed if there is a positive result for methamphetamine.
What is the difference between Amphetamine and Methamphetamine?
Amphetamines are a class of stimulant drugs that can be used to treat several conditions, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or narcolepsy. Methamphetamines are an illicit drug made from mixing amphetamines with other substances. Methamphetamine is known by several "street names" such as meth, crank, speed, or ice. The potency of methamphetamine can be as much as 4x that of amphetamines used in medications.
What can cause you to test positive for Methamphetamine?
Most drug tests will provide differentiated results for amphetamine and methamphetamine when a sample tests positive for amphetamines. This can help to determine if a person is testing positive due to legal medications or drug abuse. However, there are some over-the-counter and prescribed medications that may cause a person to test positive for methamphetamine.
What are D and L isomers?
There are 2 types of methamphetamine, levo-methamphetamine (L-methamphetamine) and dextro-methamphetamine (D-methamphetamine). They both have the same chemical formula, but their atoms are arranged differently. D-methamphetamine has a stronger stimulating and psychoactive effect than L-methamphetamine and therefore has a higher potential for abuse. In most cases, legal medications that cause a person to test positive for methamphetamine will have a higher concentration of L-methamphetamine and little to no D-methamphetamine. The inverse is also true. Most positive results for illicit methamphetamine use will have higher concentrations of D-methamphetamine than L-methamphetamine.
Why should you order a D & L Isomer Test?
Most standard drug tests do not measure the level of D and L isomers when a sample tests positive for methamphetamine. Measuring these 2 forms of methamphetamine is a positive sample can help to differentiate between someone who is abusing meth and someone testing positive due to their medication. This test can be ordered as a follow-up when someone tests positive for methamphetamine. It may also be ordered when someone is suspected of abusing meth but also takes medications that could cause a false positive.
For more testing options, please see our Drug Testing Category.
Turnaround for test results is typically up to 3 business days when results are negative. If additional testing is necessary, results may take up to 7 business days.
