Are Black Men at Higher Risk for Prostate Cancer?

How it Works

Are black men more likely to develop prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of death for men in the United States.  About 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.  For black or African American men specifically, the risk is even greater. Black and African American men are 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than white men, and 2.1 times more likely to die from it.  The reason for this disparity is likely related to a number of factors.

African American men and prostate cancer

Some studies have shown that black men have a higher genetic predisposition to developing prostate cancer.  These studies are ongoing and have not yielded definitive results as of yet.  There is also a correlation in the United States between race and socioeconomic status.  People of color are less likely to have access to preventive medical care including routine screenings and education about the risks to men's health posed by prostate cancer.  Studies and surveys have also shown that black men are less likely to trust the healthcare system and less likely to discuss potential health concerns with friends and family.  This contributes to a lower rate of testing, diagnosis, and treatment.

How to test for prostate cancer

Like most forms of cancer, there is no one-step solution to seeing if you are at risk.  However, the PSA or Prostate-Specific Antigen blood test has long been a valuable screening tool for men.  Prostate-specific antigen is a protein produced by the prostate gland.  An elevated level of PSA can be an indicator of prostate cancer.  Not all people with prostate cancer will show high levels of PSA and there are other conditions that can elevate PSA as well.  A PSA test is a simple screening tool that can help to identify when someone is at higher risk.  It can also be used to monitor treatment in someone diagnosed with prostate cancer.  Other tests, including a doctor's physical exam, are recommended but blood testing can be a place to start.
