Barbiturates Blood Drug Test
This test looks for Barbiturates in the blood. Barbiturates are a family of drugs that act as nervous system depressants. The prescribing of barbiturates has decreased in the last several decades in favor of Benzodiazepines, but they are still used in some cases to treat migraines, anxiety, insomnia, and seizure disorders. While abuse of barbiturates is not as common as it used to be, there are still cases of them being used recreationally for the sense of relaxation and euphoria they can create. Barbiturates are highly addictive and even a small miscalculation can result in an overdose. Side effects can include difficulty speaking, drowsiness, dizziness, difficulty breathing, fever, slowed heartbeat, confusion, and irritability. Abusing barbiturates is dangerous, especially when they are mixed with other drugs such as opioids or alcohol. Overdosing can result in coma or death.
Barbiturates are typically detectable in the blood for 1-3 days after use. The detection period will vary from person to person and can be affected by factors such as height, weight, metabolism, and what type of drug was taken.
