Beta Carotene Blood Test

Test Code: 001529
Specimen Type: Blood
Beta Carotene Blood Test Online

Description:

Beta Carotene Blood Test (Labcorp)

This test measures the level of Beta Carotene in the blood.  Beta Carotene is an antioxidant that breaks down to become Vitamin A (retinol).  Vitamin A contributes to a number of healthy functions in the body including vision, bone strength, immune system, skin, and cognitive function.  There are a number of foods that provide good sources of beta carotene such as leafy greens, peppers, carrots, peas, broccoli, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, and apricots.  Lack of beta carotene can lead to vitamin A deficiency.  Abnormally low levels of beta carotene can be due to a person's diet or health complications such as digestive problems, malabsorption disorders, liver disease, Celiac Disease, Crohn's Disease, or cystic fibrosis.  Vitamin A deficiency can cause hairless, dry rashy skin, impaired vision, irritability, headache, and recurrent infections.  Over supplementing with Beta Carotene can lead to health risks including an increased likelihood of developing certain types of cancer., diarrhea, nausea, headaches, and increased possibility of birth defects if taken during pregnancy.

This test is typically ordered when someone has symptoms of vitamin A deficiency.  It may be ordered along with or as a followup to a Vitamin A Blood Test.

Turnaround for this test is typically 4-7 business days.
