Description:
This test measures the level of Boron in a blood sample. Boron is a naturally occurring mineral that can be beneficial in healthy amounts but can also cause be dangerous in large quantities. Boron is found naturally in foods such as leafy greens, milk, beans, coffee, apples, potatoes, grains, and nuts. Boron is useful in promoting the development of healthy bones and muscles, supporting immune function, and helping the body to process other nutrients. Boron is also used in the production of a number of products including glass, leather, cosmetics, soap, cleansers, fuel, and fire retardants. People who work in industrial settings where boron is used or in boron mining operations may be at risk of exposure that could lead to toxicity. Areas near boron mines or factories where boron is used may be at risk of contamination in the soil or water. Boron exposure can cause irritation of the nose, throat, and eyes. Exposure to large amounts of Boron over a short or long period of time can result in toxicity that may damage the stomach, intestines, liver, kidney, or brain.
