Description:
Candida IgA, IgM, IgG Blood Test (Labcorp)
This candida test is used to screen for antibodies the body develops in response to Systemic Candidiasis or Candida. Candida is another name for yeast, a fungus which is normally found in small amounts in the body. The immune system normally keeps Candida under control but in cases where a person is sick or taking antibiotics, the yeast may spread, becoming a potentially dangerous infection. This candida test looks for 3 antibody types including IgA, IgM, and IgG. IgM antibodies typically develop shortly after an infection and decrease in number over time. IgG antibodies increase after an initial exposure and typically indicate a past or ongoing infection. IgA antibodies do not develop in all people and are usually only detectable in certain types of Candida infections. A person whose immune system is compromised may not show detectable antibody levels.
Candida occurs most often in the mouth (Thrush), genital region (yeast infection), and GI tract. A person experiencing a Candida infection can spread it to their partner through sexual contact. Symptoms of Candida can include a thick white discharge, itching or irritation in the genital area, a yeasty odor, and bloating. In some cases, Candida can spread to the blood, heart, or brain and become life-threatening.
Some factors which may lead to the development of Candida include:
- Taking antibiotics
- Taking birth control pills
- Pregnancy
- Diabetes
- HIV infection
The Candida Antibodies test is typically ordered by a person who is experiencing symptoms associated with Candida or believes they are at risk for infection.
Turnaround time for the Candida IgA, IgM, and IgG Abs test is typically 2-5 business days.
