Chlamydia Pneumoniae Test

C pneumoniae

Test Code: 139317
Specimen Type: Blood
Online chlamydia pneumoniae blood test

Description:

Chlamydia Pneumoniae Blood Test, IgG, IgM, & IgA (Labcorp)

This test looks for 3 types of antibodies to help identify infections with Chlamydia Pneumoniae.  Chlamydia pneumoniae is a type of bacteria that can cause infections of the respiratory tract such as Pneumonia and Bronchitis. C Pneumoniae is usually spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.  It can take up to 4 weeks after exposure for a person to develop symptoms.  In most cases, it takes prolonged close contact with an infected person to catch chlamydia pneumonia.  Outbreaks most commonly occur in people who live or work in schools, hospitals, prisons, nursing facilities, and military barracks.

Most chlamydia pneumonia infections are mild.  Common symptoms include a runny or stuffed nose, headache, low fever, sore throat, hoarseness, cough, and fatigue.  Cases of C pneumonia are more likely to cause inflammation and swelling in the throat and larynx than other forms of bacterial pneumonia.  Most cases resolve on their own but antibiotic treatment can be prescribed by your doctor if necessary.  In rare cases, more serious complications may arise including encephalitis, myocarditis, and worsening of asthma symptoms.

The Chlamydia Pneumonia antibody test looks for 3 types of antibodies.

  • IgM: Usually develops shortly after infection and fades away after a period of time.
  • IgG: Develop further into an infection and may remain detectable even after successful treatment.
  • IgA: Not all people develop IgA antibodies.  A positive IgA result usually indicates an active infection.

Positive test results should be discussed with your doctor.

A chlamydia pneumonia blood test is not intended to detect the sexually transmitted infection of chlamydia aka Chlamydia Trachomatis.  For the STD test, please see our Chlamydia Urine Test.

Turnaround for this test is typically 2-7 business days.
