Chromium RBC Blood Test

Test Code: 810838
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Chromium RBC Blood Test

This test measures Chromium levels in the red blood cells (RBC).  Chromium is an element that aids in digestion and helps in converting, sugar, fat, carbohydrates, and proteins into energy which can be used by the body's cells.  Chromium is found in a number of common foods and most people get enough from their regular diet.  However, people who work in an industrial setting where chromium is used may suffer from overexposure which can lead to toxicity.  Chromium toxicity can cause a variety of health issues including nerve damage, liver disease, kidney damage, heart problems, and irritation of the skin and mucous membranes.  Symptoms of Chromium toxicity can include stomach irritation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, vertigo, and muscle cramps.  An RBC test measures chromium levels in the red blood cells.  Measuring cellular levels can be more accurate than a standard blood test because it may show deficiency or overage earlier.

Testing for Chromium is typically ordered when a person works in an industrial job where chromium is utilized, especially if they are experiencing symptoms of toxicity.  A standard blood test for chromium is also available.

Turnaround for this test is typically 7-10 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
