Description:
This test looks for cocaine in a urine sample. This test is a screen only and will provide qualitative (positive or negative) results. A cocaine urine test that includes a screen with automatic confirmation on positives is also available.
Cocaine is a stimulant drug made from the leaves of the coca plant. While it is mostly known as an illegal drug, cocaine is also used medicinally as a topical anesthetic for some types of surgeries since it acts as both a numbing agent and constricts blood vessels which reduces bleeding. When used recreationally cocaine, also known as coke, usually appears as a fine white powder. Crack is a common variation of cocaine that is mixed with water and other substances, baked, and sold in the form of rocks or crystals. Cocaine powder is commonly snorted but other forms can also be injected, smoked, or taken orally. Stimulants like cocaine send high levels of dopamine into the brain. This can cause temporary effects including euphoria, increased energy, alertness, and increased sensitivity to light and sound. Other side effects include irritability, paranoia, loss of appetite, headaches, and seizures. Cocaine is highly addictive and can also cause severe health issues such as lung damage, heart disease, stroke, and heart attack.
Cocaine is typically detectable in urine for up to 3 days after use. In cases of heavy or chronic use, the detection period may be as long as several weeks. Other factors such as height, weight, and metabolism can also affect the detection period.
Cocaine testing is also available as part of a number of tests such as the 5 Panel Urine Drug Screen which looks for other drugs as well. Please see our Drug Testing Category for more options.
Turnaround for this test is typically 2-4 business days.
