Description:
Cortisol Saliva Test - 4 Specimens (Labcorp)
This test provides a measurement of Cortisol levels on 4 saliva samples. Saliva testing can provide just as accurate a measurement of adrenal hormones like Cortisol as a blood test can. Cortisol testing is usually ordered to aid in the diagnosis of conditions related to the adrenal and pituitary glands such as Addison's Disease, Cushing's Syndrome, Adrenocortical Insufficiency, or Hypersecretion.
Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Proper Cortisol levels are important for helping the body maintain a number of functions such as blood pressure, glucose levels, immune response, and stress management.
Cortisol saliva testing allows a person to make a collection at any time of day without having to be at a lab. This method also allows people to make a collection during times when they are experiencing symptoms that may be related to irregular Cortisol production such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, and insomnia.
This test is performed on 4 specimens. However, testing for a single specimen, 2 specimens, or 3 specimens is also available. This allows people to collect multiple samples at different times which can offer a more accurate assessment of how Cortisol levels rise and fall throughout the day. It may be necessary to consult your doctor to determine the best times for samples to be collected.
Due to this test only being run 3 days a week, the turnaround time for Cortisol Saliva testing can be between 6-17 business days.
