Description:
Heroin 6-AM Urine Drug Test (Labcorp)
This test looks for the presence of 6-acetylmorphine in a urine sample. 6-acetylmorphine is a metabolite of Heroin. Shortly after use, the body metabolizes heroin into 6-AM. As time passes, 6-AM will be further metabolized into morphine and to a lesser extent, codeine. Most standard drug tests look for opiates but not for 6-AM specifically. Morphine and Codeine are the most commonly tested opiates but these can be found in a number of prescription pain killers in addition to illicit substances. The presence of 6-AM is specific to heroin use since no other substance has been shown to leave this particular metabolite in the system. 6-AM is typically detectable in urine for 8-24 hours after use but may sometime be detectable for longer. Morphine may still be detectable for up to several days even after 6-AM is no longer detectable.
Heroin is an opioid derived from morphine. It is abused for the euphoric rush it creates. Heroin is highly addictive and can result in a variety of health problems including insomnia, diarrhea, uncontrolled movements, pain in the bones or muscles, liver and kidney disease, lung disease, sexual dysfunction, depression, and other personality disorders. Fatal heroin overdoses are common. Withdrawal from heroin dependence can be painful and cause severe illness.
Testing for 6-acetylmorphine is typically ordered when someone is suspected of using heroin. This test may be ordered when someone has tested positive for opiates to help distinguish between the use of heroin and other prescription opiates. In the event of a positive result, a numerical value for the level detected will be provided. Negative results will simply state "negative." A Blood Heroin Test which has a shorter detection period but may be helpful for determining if someone has recently been under the influence is also available.
Negative results for this test are typically available in 1-4 business days. If additional confirmatory testing is necessary, results can take 5-8 business days.
