24-hour Urine Histamine Test

Test Code: 144618
Specimen Type: Urine
Online histamine urine test

Description:

24-hour Urine Histamine Test (Labcorp)

This test measures the level of histamine in a urine sample collected over a period of 24 hours.  Histamine is a chemical released by the body's immune system that causes the symptoms commonly associated with an allergic reaction.  In people with the disorder known as Systemic Mastocytosis, a large number of white blood cells called masts build up in the body.  Mast cells can trigger an immune response similar to an allergic reaction as well as causing inflammation in various parts of the body that can result in organ damage.  Mastocytosis can cause a person to experience anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.  In some cases, mastocytosis can cause periodic outbreaks of symptoms with no apparent trigger.  Since histamine levels in urine are normally very low, elevated levels can be a sign of a condition that is affecting the immune system.

This test may be ordered when someone has experienced severe allergy symptoms, with or without a trigger.  Testing can help to determine if someone has recently experienced an anaphylactic reaction.  Histamine urine testing can aid in identifying conditions like mastocytosis.

Turnaround for the Histamine Urine Test is typically 3-6 business days, barring any unusual delays.
