This test measures the level of Jo-1 antibodies in the blood.  Jo-1 is a type of autoantibody which is associated with disorders that cause inflammation.  One of the primary disorders associated with Jo-1 antibodies is polymyositis.  Polymyositis (PM) is an inflammatory disease that causes muscle weakness in the hips, arms, shoulders, or neck.  People with polymyositis often have other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, lung disease, Sjogren's syndrome, or lupus. 

Testing for Jo-1 antibodies can aid in diagnosing certain autoimmune disorders as well as ruling out some conditions.  Jo-1 testing can also be helpful in monitoring treatment.
