Description:
Tangerine Allergy Blood Test (Labcorp)
The purpose of this test is to measure a person’s allergic reaction to tangerines. Tangerines, also known as Mandarin oranges, are a type of citrus fruit grown in many areas of the world including the United States.
What is a food allergy?
Allergies occur when the body’s immune system reacts to a foreign substance and mistakenly treats it as a threat. Depending on the severity of the reaction, food allergies can range from an annoyance to life-threatening. If you suspect you have one or more food allergies, it is important to get tested and follow up with your doctor to ensure your health is not put at risk.
How does blood allergy testing work?
This test checks your blood for a type of allergy-related antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE). When you are exposed to an allergen, your immune system activates the release of too much of the antibody IgE. IgE activation causes the release of a substance called histamine, which causes an allergic reaction. IgE antibodies are normally found in small amounts in the blood, but higher amounts can be a sign that the body overreacts to allergens. Having IgE antibodies, along with allergic symptoms, may indicate an allergy. If test results show that you have an allergic reaction, it is recommended to follow up with a physician to determine the appropriate course of action.
What are the symptoms of an allergic reaction?
Common allergy symptoms include coughing, sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, burning, itching, or redness of the skin, dry or scaly skin, swelling, blisters, or hives. People with asthma may find that allergies worsen their symptoms. In rare cases, an extreme allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis may occur. If you experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling in the mouth or throat, nausea, vomiting, or a sudden drop in blood pressure, seek immediate medical attention.
What can I do to help my allergies?
The best thing you can do to help your allergies is to avoid the allergen that’s causing your reaction. That means avoiding tangerines or products that contain tangerine fruit, juice, or oil. In some cases, a fruit allergy may mean that a person is also allergic to other products with similar proteins. Following up with your doctor to determine which additional allergens may be a cause of concern and how to address your allergies is recommended.
When should I Get Tested?
Testing is recommended for people who think they have had symptoms of an allergic reaction after exposure to tangerines or products made from tangerines. Note that not everyone will have the same symptoms and the intensity of symptoms will vary. If you are not certain you need an allergy test, you can always ask the opinion of your doctor.
What will my results tell me?
Your results will provide a numerical value for IgE antibodies to the allergens that were tested in your blood. Results will also include a scale to help determine the severity of your potential allergy (low, moderate, high, severe, etc.) Having a positive result does not necessarily mean that you have an allergy. Test results should be interpreted along with clinical symptoms. It is also possible for someone to have an allergy even if they do not show elevated levels of IgE antibodies. If test results are negative and allergy symptoms persist, it is recommended to consult your doctor.
Request A Test also offers a Citrus Allergy Panel that includes tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, lime, and orange for a more comprehensive screening. Please see our Allergy Testing Category for additional options.
