Timothy Grass (Hay) Allergy Test

Cat's Tail

Test Code: 602506
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Timothy Grass (Hay) Allergy Test

This test is used to measure a person's allergic reaction to Timothy Grass.  Timothy Grass, also known as Cat's Tail or simply Timothy, is a common perennial grass grown in many parts of the world.  The hay which is often used as feed and bedding for both livestock and domestic pets is often composed in part or primarily of Timothy.  Timothy pollen is a common source of allergies.  Those who are allergic to Timothy Grass will often be allergic to other forms of grass pollen as well.  Common allergy symptoms include red watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, itching, shortness of breath, redness, and swelling of the face.  Severe allergies, while rare, can cause chronic cough, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and wheezing.

Allergies are caused by a reaction in the body's immune system.  The body identifies certain substances as harmful and produces IgE antibodies against them.  These antibodies trigger the release of histamine which causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction.  The severity of the allergy will vary from one person to the next.  Blood allergy testing provides numerical results for IgE antibody levels to help determine how severe a reaction a person will have.  Positive allergy test results should be discussed with a person's doctor to determine the appropriate follow up.

Regional allergy panels that test for a variety of respiratory allergens including timothy grass which are common in various parts of the US are also available.  Please see our Allergy Testing Category for more options.

Results for this test typically tale 3-5 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.
