Description:

Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy Fractionated (D2 +D3) Blood Test (Labcorp)

This test measures Vitamin D levels in a blood sample.  In addition to measuring total Vitamin D, this test also measures the 2 main forms of Vitamin D, D2 and D3.  A standard Vitamin D blood test that just measures total Vitamin D levels is also available.

Vitamin D plays an important role in a number of healthy bodily processes including the development of bones and teeth and maintaining the immune system.  Studies have shown that healthy vitamin D levels can also lessen the risks of health issues such as diabetes, arthritis, and cancer.  The majority of Vitamin D in the body is made of 2 forms.  Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is primarily found in plant sources such as yeast and mushrooms.  D2 is sometimes prescribed to treat certain health disorders such as rickets, hypoparathyroidism, and familial hypophosphatemia  Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is mostly found in animal sources such as eggs, fish, and liver.  D3 is also produced by the body when it is exposed to sunlight.  Vitamin D is also found in a number of nutritional supplements and is often added to food products such as milk, juices, bread, and cereals.

A Fractionated Vitamin D test can be useful when someone is experiencing vitamin D deficiency because it can give more information by quantifying how much of each form of vitamin D a person has.  This test can also be helpful for people who are taking supplements to monitor their levels.

Turnaround for this test is typically 4-10 business days.
