Aldosterone 24 Hour Urine Test

Test Code: 004291
Specimen Type: Urine

Description:

Aldosterone 24 Hour Urine Test

This test measures Aldosterone levels in a 24-hour urine sample.  Aldosterone is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands which help to regulate the levels of sodium and potassium in the blood as well as controlling blood pressure and volume.  A condition known as Primary Aldosteronism or Conn Syndrome causes the adrenal glands to produce excess aldosterone which causes the body to retain excess sodium and lose potassium resulting in high blood pressure.  Because blood Aldosterone levels fluctuate throughout the day, a urine test can sometimes be more informative than a blood test since it looks at the average level of aldosterone being excreted over a 24-hour period.

An Aldosterone test is typically ordered to help diagnose the cause of high blood pressure, especially if a person is not responding to blood pressure medication or has low potassium levels.  Blood testing for Aldosterone and Aldosterone/Renin Ratio are also available.

Turnaround for the Aldosterone 24 hour urine test is typically 6-10 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Requirements:

If the donor is taking diuretics, antihypertensive drugs, cyclic progestational agents, estrogen, or licorice, results for aldosterone may not be interpretable. Donors should be on a diet containing 135 mmol (3 g) sodium per day for at least two weeks and preferably 30 days prior to testing.

For 24-hour urine specimen: Obtain a specimen container and instructions from the draw site.  Void at 8 AM and discard the specimen. Then collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period (ie, 8 AM the next morning) into the plastic urine container. Screw the lid on securely and return the container promptly to the draw site. Transport the specimen promptly to the laboratory.
