Plasma Renin Activity Test

PRA

Test Code: 002006
Specimen Type: Blood
Renin Activity, Plasma Test Online

Description:

Plasma Renin Activity Test

This test measures Renin levels in the blood.  Renin is an enzyme produced by the kidneys which help to control blood pressure.  Renin testing can be helpful in determining the cause of high blood pressure (hypertension), especially when a person is not responding to blood pressure medication.

Renin Testing is often ordered to aid in diagnosing the cause of unexplained high blood pressure.  The process through which the body regulates blood pressure relies on both Renin and the hormone Aldosterone.  While Renin testing is sometimes useful by itself, it is common to measure Renin and Aldosterone levels together.  An Aldosterone: Renin Ratio Test which measures both components is also available.

Due to delays at the lab the turnaround time for this test is up to 10 business days.

Where can I find a Renin Activity, Plasma Test near me?

Check our lab finder to locate a collection site in your area.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Requirements:

In order to facilitate interpretation of test results, the donor should be taken off medications for at least three weeks prior to sample collection. Dietary sodium levels during the period prior to testing can affect renin levels. Sodium restriction tends to cause an increase in renin activity, while supplementation can result in lower values.

Since posture prior to collection affects renin levels, it is recommended that the donor be ambulatory for at least 30 minutes before blood collection.
