Alpha Gal Ige Allergy Blood Test

Red Meat Allergy, Alpha Galactose

Test Code: 650001
Specimen Type: Blood
Alpha Galactose (Gal) Allergy IgE Blood Test Online

Description:

Alpha Galactose (Gal) Allergy IgE Test

This test measures IgE antibodies to galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) to help determine if a person may have an allergic reaction to red meat.  Alpha-gal is a carbohydrate molecule found in most red meat, including beef, pork, and lamb.  Unlike most food allergies, alpha-gal may not cause a reaction until hours after the meat has been consumed.  Carbohydrates take longer to be absorbed by the body than proteins which cause most allergic reactions, so the onset of symptoms can be delayed.

Some people develop an alpha-gal allergy after being bitten by ticks that carry the protein in their saliva.  People with this allergy may also have a reaction to certain types of medication which also contain alpha-gal.

This test is typically ordered when a person experiences symptoms such as hives, itching, swollen lips or face, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, or shortness of breath within 8 hours of eating meat.  An Alpha-Gal Allergy Panel that includes testing for alpha-gal and several types of red meat is also available.

Turnaround for this test is typically 3-5 business days.
