Alpha Galactose (Gal) IgE Panel

Test Code: 91380
Specimen Type: Blood

Description:

Alpha Galactose (Gal) IgE Panel

This test measures IgE antibodies which can help to help determine if a person may an allergic reaction to red meat.  The Alpha-Gal Panel includes specific meat allergen tests as well as a test for galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal).  Alpha-gal is a carbohydrate molecule found in most red meat, including beef, pork, and lamb.  Unlike most food allergies, alpha-gal may not cause a reaction until hours after the meat has been consumed.  Carbohydrates take longer to be absorbed by the body than the proteins which cause most allergic reactions, so the onset of symptoms can be delayed.

This package includes:

  • Alpha-gal IgE allergy
  • Beef IgE Allergy
  • Pork IgE Allergy
  • Lamb IgE Allergy

Some people develop an alpha-gal allergy after being bitten by ticks that carry the protein in their saliva.  People with this allergy may also have a reaction to certain types of medication which also contain alpha-gal.

This test is typically ordered when a person experiences symptoms such as hives, itching, swollen lips or face, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, or shortness of breath after eating meat.   The symptoms may appear quickly or over a period of several hours.  For more testing options, please see our Allergy Testing Category.

Turnaround for this test is typically 3-5 business days.
