Description:
Amylase Isoenzymes Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures several forms of Amylase in the blood. Amylase is an enzyme that aids in digestion, particularly the digestion of starch. It is produced by both the pancreas and the salivary glands. Increased amylase levels can be indicative of pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer. However, a regular amylase blood test is sometimes not specific enough to determine if damage to the pancreas is responsible for the elevated amylase production. An amylase isoenzyme test breaks down the amylase to differentiate between the type produced by the pancreas (p-type) and the type produced by the salivary glands (s-type). Determining if the P-type amylase is increased can better aid in diagnosing pancreatic health issues.
This test is often ordered when a person has symptoms of pancreatitis such as abdominal pain, back pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, and elevated heart rate. It may be ordered as a follow up to an elevated result on a standard amylase blood test. Amylase testing is often ordered along with a lipase blood test.
Turnaround for this test is typically 3-4 business days.
