Description:
Amylase Urine Test (Labcorp)
This test measures Amylase levels in a random or timed urine sample. Amylase is an enzyme produced primarily by the pancreas and salivary glands which aids in digestion. Elevated levels of Amylase can indicate a number of conditions such as pancreatitis, pancreatic tumor, or gallstones blocking the pancreatic duct. Measuring urine amylase levels can sometimes be more useful than a blood test. In some conditions such as acute pancreatitis, blood levels of Amylase may be normal while urine levels will show as elevated.
Amylase testing is typically ordered when a person is experiencing symptoms of a pancreatic disorder such as abdominal or back pain, fever, loss of appetite, or nausea. This test can be done on either a single random specimen or a timed collection. Timed collections are typically done over periods ranging from 2-24 hours. A person's doctor can help them to determine the best timing for a urine sample to aid in diagnosis.
Urine amylase testing may be done along with an Amylase Blood Test or as a follow-up to a blood test. Urine testing may sometimes be ordered after treatment to determine if it was effective.
Turnaround for testing on random specimens is typically 1-3 business days. On 24-hour specimens, the turnaround is typically 3-5 business days.
