Amylase Urine Test

Test Code: 003293
Specimen Type: Urine

Description:

Amylase Urine Test

This test measures Amylase levels in a random or timed urine sample.  Amylase is an enzyme produced primarily by the pancreas and salivary glands which aids in digestion.  Elevated levels of Amylase can indicate a number of conditions such as pancreatitis, pancreatic tumor, or gallstones blocking the pancreatic duct.  Measuring urine amylase levels can sometimes be more useful than a blood test.  In some conditions such as acute pancreatitis, blood levels of Amylase may be normal while urine levels will show as elevated.

Amylase testing is typically ordered when a person is experiencing symptoms of a pancreatic disorder such as abdominal or back pain, fever, loss of appetite, or nausea.  This test can be done on either a single random specimen or a timed collection.  Timed collections are typically done over periods ranging from 2-24 hours.  A person's doctor can help them to determine the best timing for a urine sample to aid in diagnosis.

Urine amylase testing may be done along with an Amylase Blood Test or as a followup to a blood test.  Urine testing may be sometimes be ordered after treatment to determine if it was effective.

Turnaround for this test is typically 1-3 business days.

Note: Result turn around times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Requirements:

Please state at the time of ordering if you would like to do a timed specimen collection.  For times collections, obtain a specimen container and instructions from the lab. Discard the first urination at the beginning of the collection period and collect all further urinations until the end of the collection period.  Return the sample to the lab as soon as possible.
