Description:
Antistreptolysin O (ASO) Blood Titer Test (Labcorp)
This test measures the level of Antistreptolysin O (ASO) Antibodies in the blood. ASO is one of several types of antibodies produced by the immune system in response to infection with A Streptococcus Bacteria. Streptococcus A causes a number of infections including Strep Throat. Most strep infections can be successfully treated with antibiotics but when left untreated they can cause serious health issues such as kidney disease, heart damage, hypertension, and rheumatic fever. Some strep infections do not show any symptoms initially or show mild symptoms that resolve on their own. ASO antibody testing can help a person and their doctor determine if they have an unresolved infection and treat it before more serious complications arise.
ASO Antibody testing is typically ordered when a person has symptoms that may be related to a condition caused by a previous strep infection, especially if they have recently had a sore throat or skin infection. These symptoms can include fever, joint swelling or pain, rash, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, fatigue, blood in the urine, uncontrolled jerky movements, and high blood pressure.
Turnaround for this test is typically 1-2 business days.
