AST Liver Blood Test

Specimen Type: Blood
|
Description:
Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) Blood Test (Labcorp)
This test measures levels of Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) in the blood. AST is an enzyme primarily found in the cells of the liver. Increased levels of AST are typically produced when the liver is damaged. While elevated AST levels are often indicative of liver damage, they may also be caused by conditions affecting other parts of the body as well.
AST testing can be done to monitor treatment for liver disease or when a person is experiencing symptoms of a liver disorder. Liver function testing is often included as part of a routine general health screening. AST is typically tested along with ALT, another liver enzyme.
Both ALT and AST are included in a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel and a Hepatic Function test.
Turnaround time for the Aspartate Aminotransferase test is typically 1 business day.
