Description:
This test measures Barbiturates in the urine. Barbiturates are a family of drugs that act as nervous system depressants. The prescribing of barbiturates has decreased in the last several decades in favor of Benzodiazepines, but they are still used in some cases to treat migraines, anxiety, insomnia, and seizure disorders. While abuse of barbiturates is not as common as it used to be, there are still cases of them being used recreationally for the sense of relaxation and euphoria they can create. Barbiturates are highly addictive and even a small miscalculation can result in an overdose. Side effects can include difficulty speaking, drowsiness, dizziness, difficulty breathing, fever, slowed heartbeat, confusion, and irritability. Abusing barbiturates is dangerous, especially when they are mixed with other drugs such as opioids or alcohol. Overdosing can result in coma or death.
Short-acting barbiturates are typically detectable in urine for 1-3 days after use. Longer-acting barbiturates may be detectable for up to 7 days. The detection period will vary from person to person and can be affected by factors such as height, weight, and metabolism.
Positive results for this test will provide a numerical value for the level detected. A blood test for barbiturates is also available. A variety of drug tests such as the 7 Panel Urine Test are available which look for barbiturates as well as other types of drugs. Please see our Drug Testing Category for more options.
Turnaround for this test is typically 5-10 business days.
At this time, Request A Test does not offer DOT (Department of Transportation) certified testing.
